CNKS pretty well said it already. Magneto ignition has no connection to the battery/starter. The switch just grounds the magneto; disconnecting that wire ensures the magneto isn't grounded by a bad switch.

Do you have an ohmmeter? That's the most useful tool. If there's no spark when the motor is cranked you probably have a bad connection, broken wire, or a short inside the distributor.
