All the wire on the side of the Magneto does is ground the magneto to stop the spark to the plugs. When the tractor is runing, that wire must NOT be grounded or the tractor will not run. You stop the tractor by grounding the wire and killing the mag spark. That is the opposite of what you do for an battery ignition. With battery ignition, you must have electricity from the battery to the coil for the tractor to run. On the mag tractor, the switch grounds(is closed) the mag when in the off position. On the battery ignition, the which is open in the off position and closed to run, opposite of the mag situation. The battery has nothing to do with the spark if you have a magneto. You don't even need a battery for the tractor to run or start. It should start just fine with a crank or by pulling even with no battery.
