This may not be your problem at all. 2 years ago on my dads old C it developed a noise in the area your talking about and the clutch had a weird feel to it. The bracket that holds the throw out bearing in place came apart and the entire doo dad thing was spining around in there. Took a little time to get to but not hard to fix. I think you can take a look at your throw out bearing throw an inspection hole with a flash light.
