Well Paul - for claiming to not be an "expert" you seem to have this ignition stuff down pretty good! A (minor) correction to battery vs magneto discussion however: Battery ignition throws a hotter spark at it's lowest speed. Thus battery ignition is generally preferred for easy starting. A mag's sparks however get hotter the faster it spins. Thus it has the advantage for high compression/high RPM engines. At typical tractor engine speeds, a battery ignition is entirely satisfactory, and is cheaper and less fussy to maintain than a mag. Hence you don't see not a lot of mag-equipped tractors out there anymore.
