Well, I am by no means an expert, but I'll tell ya what I do know. You're on the right track. A magneto ignition is completely self contained. The magneto generates it's own electricity and does not need a battery or seperate coil. All systems need a way to "distribute" the spark to the different plugs, so yes, a magneto has a distributor cap. Some older tractors had magneto ignition AND electric start, and may have had a generator/battery/starter system completely seperate from the magneto. An advantage of the magneto system is that there is much less wiring (no external coil, no ballast resistor, no ignition switch) and you don't have to worry about the battery going down. The disadvantage is that if the magneto is not in good shape, they can be a bear to start. Also, I suspect (although I don't know for sure, perhaps someone can comment on this) that coil/points/distributor ignition will throw a hotter spark, making for better starting and allowing for higher compression engines.
