That is interesting. The softer nut backing off makes sense if I think about it right. Crush the thread on the nut and only the back side of the nut thread is biting--or at least that's how I'll keep the concept straight. I've only found one source online so far that specifies that their square head bolts are Gr. 5 or 8 , and I'm going with 8. Just hope I can get them to sell me less than five gross of each! Dang but they're precious. I can't find carriage bolts any tougher than Gr. 5, so will have to go with those for my wheel weights, figuring they're not taking a lot of stress anyway, just sort of hanging around. Many thanks!
