Used to test bolts, nuts, and other fasteners - if a nut is a lesser (softer) grade than the bolt, any tension will tend to strip the nut from the bolt - not a good situaton on a rim! You CAN, however, use a lower grade nut as a jam nut, but if you are using a 5 or 8 bolt, you might as well use a second of the same grade. Another interesting (maybe!) note - common split lock washers are only about 25% effective in stopping a nut from loosening (I know this will stir up a debate) - cotter pins or safety wire works best if you REALLY want to make sure a nut won't vibrate off! Just my rambling $.02 !
