Well, you kind of need an ignition switch if you ever want to turn the engine off ;o) although it really should be called a ground switch, since it just grounds the ignition circuit to short out the spark. I always thought of a magneto as just a high voltage/low amperage generator that feeds directly to the distributor (instead of storing the energy in a battery).
