Hey Jared - The cam drive key has sheared off alright! I've run into the same thing twice myself - a couple years ago with my Super M, and early this spring on a friend's 400. In both cases the nut holding the cam gear to the camshaft had unscrewed and dropped into the bottom of the timing gear cover. That let the cam gear flop around until the key broke, then tractors died. Super M ran a couple hundred hours with the nut off before failing (evidenced by an ominous knock at idle). In the process it destroyed (wallowed out) the cam gear hub - had to buy a new gear. Also took a chip out of the keyway of the camshaft but was able to tack weld the new key in place and not have to replace the camshaft. The 400 on the other hand simply sheared the key and quit. All we had to do was install a new key and cam gear nut. Not a difficult job to do - my son and I did the Super M in a couple of evenings. Hardest part is getting the front end off and back on again. A bucket loader is handy here. A couple of tips: 1 - You'll need a 2-1/2" socket to remove the nut holding the fan pulley on the crank. (Borrow one if you can - 2-1/2" sockets are NOT cheap!) 2 - Use a new keeper under the cam gear nut. Also treat the threads with high strength Loctite thread locker before assembly to keep the nut from unscrewing again. Punch below for a few photos I took when I did the Super M. Good luck!
