M has no power under load

I have a friend that has a M tractor. It is set up with a 12 volt system. The tractor wasn't running good when I got there. The points were burnt and the tractor would backfire. We went and purchased new points and router cap. Put them in and the tractor worked fine. I Did not drive it around. I got a call the next day and he said that it has no power at all, idles well, but no power to even climb a hill.

That could mean not enough gas getting to the carb or could the points be getting burnt because it is converted to 12 volt? It does have a resistor install before the coil. What else is there?
