Keep the German Diesel. The coolant is most likely leaking past the o-rings at the bottom of the sleeves. If you do a total rebuild, I belive there were higher-compression pistons in the late 358's and you can use those. I'm also in Minnesota, and we run a 1982 786 with a 358, and it's the easiest starting diesel ever. We also have a 686 with a D-310 German Diesel, and it must have the lower compression pistons, because it acts just like you say your 826 does. This same topic came up a while ago on the Red Power Magazine board, and it sounds like the engine swap for an 826 is a bigger project than a bolt-in. The frame rails are different, and the radiator inlet/outlets are on different sides on gas and diesel models. That C-301 will also be very thirsty, even just doing light work. The C-301 is a sleeveless engine, so if anything bad ever happens, the block is wrecked.
