This spring I unfortunately discovered our trusty IH 826 diesel (358 cid) with about 7,300 hours had coolant leaking into the crankcase. That tractor is used around 60 hours per year for: planting (half throttle), stalk chopping (PTO speed), some dragging (1/2-3/4 throttle), pulling grain wagons ( various throttle settings), and loader work ( alot of idling). That diesel has always been tough to start in the winter up here in Minnesota and often time it probably never gets up to operating temp. in the cold weather. Given the jobs this tractor currently performs and the low hours of use might I be better off swapping for a gas engine as opposed to overhauling the diesel? The rest of the tractor is fine. In speaking with my local IH service manager a gas engine (301 cid) out of a 806, 826, or 856 should bolt in OK and I'm sure would be much easier starting in the winter. What is the availability and reputation of that engine and what could I expect to pay for one In decent condition?
