SAE 30 non detergent IS the correct oil for the liftall units. Hytran or similar products will work, but not better than SAE 30. It would appear that the unit is getting worn, and when the oil heats up it loses enough pump pressure to cause the problem. You have a few choices...but none of them may appeal to you. 1) Rebuild the pump. Not a really bad job if you're mechanically inclined, but parts won't be cheap, and the pump is a beast to lower out of the tractor without help. It will almost certainly be heavier than you expect. DO NOT have your feet, hands, or (worse yet) your head under it when it comes loose! 2) Use a larger diameter cylinder on the 3pt hitch. A larger cylinder can lift the same load on less pressure. Another alternative would be to modify the hitch to take 2 cylinders for the same effect. 3) Explore the possibility of modifying the 3pt hitch to allow for the use of a longer-stroke cylinder which could be mounted in a position to lift with more mechanical advantage. If you have an 8"-stroke cylinder now, and you can weld on a bracket to allow for the same movement of the 3pt hitch with a 12"-stroke or longer cylinder, the old pump may still lift the load. 4) Use SAE 40 oil. This will help a little, as the oil won't thin as much when warm. I actually used some 20W50 in a Super M lift-all for a while that was having similar difficulties. (And no, it did not seem to have any foaming difficulties with this type of oil.) 5) Price the possibility of converting to a live-hydraulic system instead of rebuilding the old lift-all unit. Cost will be more, but the conversion will result in a more versatile tractor with increased value.

Talk of the Town: Winterizing Engines - To Drain or Not to Drain? - by Russ Berry. What is this strange attraction I have to equipment and machinery? How did I get this way? I came from the suburbs and own a small horse farm in rural Loudoun County, Virginia. You can call me a "weekend farmer." The local farmers do. Does it bother me? No. I am just happy to have their friendship. At least the word "farmer" is in my title. But what is the attraction? How can I explain the sensation and exhilaration I feel when I turn the key and hear the engine come to life (most
