Stephen, This first part is going to be hard for me to describe, so please bear with me: if you have the hydraulic pump, it will appear, from the side of the tractor, like a "triangle" with a hole at the bottom point; this "triangle" is on the bottom side of the chassis (the section under the gas tank). There might be a semi-flat plate on the bottom that's held in with two bolts just behind the pump; remove it and you'll see a removable shaft that powers the hydraulic pump (this connects to the "bushing" of the countershaft I previously described) and the engine-to-transmission shaft above that (coupled together with four bolts). If you have the pump, there will only be about 6 to 8 inches of space; you'll see four bolts (9/16" I think) holding in the pump. Remove the countershaft-to-pump shaft and the four pump bolts and the pump will come out the bottom; BE CAREFUL because the pump is very heavy - use two people if possible. Also remove any of the 1/2" hydraulic piping on the outlets, or the pump won't come out (there could be up to three of these). In this cavity, in the upper rear portion, is the hub that connects the engine to the transmission (I think it has six or nine 9/16" bolts) - remove this and the front part of the sliding gear shaft will be free. Remove the three bolts you mentioned that are on the other end, and the shaft should come out. The countershaft might be harder: remove the "bushing" for the front part, and remove the snap ring for the back part; it should come out. You don't need to remove the reversing gear. Do everything backwards to put it back together, but do these two things: 1. Make sure you move the sliding gears in their proper position so they mate with the gear forks. 2. Be very careful and slow when you put the engine-to-transmission hub back on, because if you did what I did, you'll accidentally destroy the roller bearing that connects the shaft to the hub; make sure they line up and go in together easily (also pre-oil this roller bearing if you think of it). They don't make a transmission cover gasket, so you'll have to use a sealant like silicone gasket goop or form-a-gasket.
