Uh, the common SAE sizes are 1/4-20, 1/4-28, 5/16-18, 5/16-24, 3/8-16, 3/8-24, 7/16-14, 7/16-20, 1/2-13 and 1/2-20. I was told the fine thread's advantages are that you can torque 'em tighter, they stay tight better and because the thread doesn't cut into the shaft of the bolt, screw or rod so much, the strength of the bolt, screw or rod isn't sacrificed so badly by the reduction of major diameter the thread cut causes. Sure, there are disadvantages in fine thread application, but in most areas where extreme strength is required and weight and area are precious(airplanes, for instance) fine threads are utilized widely.
