The easy fix for the shutoff problem is to install a diode. Go to any electronics store (Radio Shack et al) and ask for a 1N4001 or equivelent diode. While there, purchase a 47 ohm, 2 watt resistor (to protect the diode in case of a short). Take the diode and resistor and wire them in series - spliced inline with that terminal 1 wire, with the "band" end of the diode facing toward the alternator end of the wire. Otherwise, it looks like you got it right.
