With help from this forum and articles from this web-site, I finished the installation of a 12-volt alternator on my 1943 Farmall A. The rest of the system had already been converted to 12-volts, but no alternator, so of course the battery needed charging frequently. Only one modification needed...the "A Step by Step 12-volt Conversion" article has a nice wiring diagram, which I followed. The only problem is with the engine running the alternator #1 post is directly conncected to the coil, so it wouldn't shut off when I opened the switch. The key switch had been abandoned some time before I got the tractor. A single-pole toggle switch had been installed between the battery and the coil, which was fine when there was no alternator. When test-operating the tractor after completing the installation, I was surprised when I opened the switch and the tractor kept running. I closed the choke to shut it down, and then experimented to be sure opening the circuit from the alternator #1 to the coil, and opening the other switch shut the tractor off...and it does. A two-pole switch will fix that little problem. Had 13.2 volts at idle speed, and 14.5 volts revved up. Some simple bracket modifications were necessary, and I had to straighten and weld an extension on the original tensioning arm to make it fit. Alternator cost was $21 from a salvage yard. It didn't work, so I picked up a rebuild kit for $13. I used a one-size-fits-all belt I've had laying around for years, so I didn't have to disassemble to tractor to install the belt. The belt is industrial quality, and is made with links that allow it to be made to almost any length. Wire and connectors were on hand as well, so total cost was $34...plus my new switch yet to be purchased. Thanks for all the help and the articles, which made the job pretty easy.

Women and Tractors - Tractor Engine Repair - by Teri Burkholder. One of the great things about working on a tractor engine with your other half is that you know what he is thinking of at all times and can anticipate his every move and his next thought of what he will do. With Ben, anyway, I can tell! He'll be busy working and I’m handing him tools and he says, "give me that..." and I’ve already got it in his hand or "hand me that....."and I’ve got the portable light right where he needed it placed to see. "Run in the house and get me a...."as I open th
