I feel real strange answering a post in this board, but I though I'd give you my impression of the 886. I spent quite a bit of time in one and they are a real solid tractor. It always seemed to start pretty well in the cold (I would still plug it in, though), and was excellent on fuel. You could pull a six-row pull-type planter at 6 to 7 mph and only burn around 2.5 gallons of fuel per hour. The shifters can get some wear and be a little sloppy, but that's nearly any tractor for you. That 886 didn't have the electronic dash, but we have a 1086 that does and it still works well, except for the EGT part of the display, which quit several years ago. But I don't think you really have to be too concerned with EGT on a lower horsepower, non-turboed tractor. The only thing I never liked about the 886 was that it seemed like a dog when getting out of a 1086 and into it, but there is a considerable horsepower difference there. IH build excellent engines, so providing it's been maintained, it should be okay. Some guys complain about T/A problems, but once again, with proper maintenance and operation, they'll hold up just fine. Just look at all the things you would check on any color tractor, and you'll be fine. The 886 that I drove the most was a real sweet old tractor, but unfortunately it ended up burning to the ground due to an electrical short. It was replaced with an even nicer one, so that was a bonus. I happened to be in this board posting a question of my own, so this is just my two cents.

We traveled for six and a half hours to our destination - a little country town with a population of no more then one hundred and fifty people (57 of them being children under the age of thirteen). We arrived hoping to meet up with a man we knew had over one
