Most people install an alternator when they convert to 12 volts. Generators are available, but usually are more scarce. A generator would also have a voltage regulator installed with it. On the M, this regulator would usually be found just behind the engine - below the gas tank. A generator is longer than it is wide - an alternator isn't as long as a generator, but it will usually have a larger diameter. If your charging system has been working, and you have a 12 volt positive ground system, the odds are that your tractor is using a generator. It *could* be possible that you have an alternator installed and someone installed the battery incorrectly - subsequently damaging the alternator. This may explain why your tractor won't crank. The battery would be dead. Look at your car. It will have (unless you have a very old car - about '63 vintage or older) and alternator installed. Then look at the generator or alternator on your tractor. You'll be able to note that the alternators will look very similiar - or how generators/alternators look very different.
