I had the same prob a w\my 300u too. There can be many causes for this proplem, most of which you have addressed, as did I before I finally found a solution. I knew my engine was fairly used by the very light amount of smoke coming from the exhaust. My plugs were fouling about every 60 to 90 mins of use,I could deal with that, it takes me about 10 mins to wire brush the plugs and I'm good for another 60-90. Eventually I was cleaning the plugs every 10min or less...no good... replaced: coil with accel supercoil. plugs wires cap rotor points and cond. I also thoroughly went through the carb. after going through all this and playing with dwell settings, timing, and float level, there was no difference at all. Runs very strong for 5 to 10 minutes. I did not do a compression check cause I didn't know what the spec ahould be on a 6.5 to 1 ratio engine, but I figured it probably was low. No time for rebuilding any time soon, so as a last resort I drained the oil and put in a mixture of sae 30 and 80-90 gearlube(1 to 4 ratio...3 of the 30 to 1 8090). Thicker oil will help close worn tolerences. And to boot I found some plugs that had a huge center electrode, about 1\4 in long,(less heat disipation=hotter plug)...WELL....long story longer...tractor starts instantly and have not had to clean the plugs at all and I've been running the tractor for a couple of hours a weekend for two to three months...I'm very happy. Do not do the oil thing if you know that the engine is fairly fresh(thick oil will not flow through close tolerences). The plug thing will not hurt anything. Found them at wal-mart, matched up threads and width, new ones were slightly longer but did not have any problem. The important thing is the long electrode. Try this, if it doesn't work, I'll buy your tractor... good luck. PV new mexico

Talk of the Town: Winterizing Engines - To Drain or Not to Drain? - by Russ Berry. What is this strange attraction I have to equipment and machinery? How did I get this way? I came from the suburbs and own a small horse farm in rural Loudoun County, Virginia. You can call me a "weekend farmer." The local farmers do. Does it bother me? No. I am just happy to have their friendship. At least the word "farmer" is in my title. But what is the attraction? How can I explain the sensation and exhilaration I feel when I turn the key and hear the engine come to life (most
