Going from memory (don't have a wiring diagram here) it goes like this:
"GEN" terminal on the regulator goes to "A" post on the generator.
"F" terminal on reg to "F" on gen
"BAT" terminal on reg to the ammeter
"L" terminal on reg to the ignition and light switch's hot terminals.
If you've got it wired right and the battery still goes down, suspect a sticking cutout relay inside the new regulator.
