Gas start diesels, is it unique to IH?

I bought my first tractor 4 years ago, a W400D. I knew very little then but was intrigued by the gas start. It seemed to me that this concept was much better than glow plugs or pony motors, and in theory should work great in winter here in Manitoba where we get -40 temps. So far I haven't been proven wrong. So what happened? Why was the concept abandoned? Did any other manufacturer try this besides IH?
