Bud - I had grounding problems with my '53 SM too. Only my problems resulted in several "no start" situations, and once with fire when a hydraulic hose ignited near the live pump (battery box had rust between it and the deck plate, so the battery was grounding thru the hyd hose reinforcing wire). Solution was to buy a longer battery ground cable and bolt the end of the cable directly to one of the starter mounting bolts. Haven't had a problem since!! I had similar starting problems with the diesel in my old KW truck - running the heavy ground cable direct to the starter cured that one too.
