If you had air in the system I suspect you would have very little pedal (i.e. going to floor). If you have a good pedal full of brake, and VERY stiff pedal it might be the vacuum booster which would give you plenty of brake, just requiring a lot of pedal pressure to get much brake. I would suspect the proportioning valve or anti-lock solenoid. This should be an aluminum block looking device ahead of the master cylinder. It sounds like you might be getting more rear brake than front. Normally you should get more proportioning to the front than rear due to weight thus the need for proportioning. These trucks had anti-locks on rear only. Good luck. I know you can sometimes throw a lot of money at these type things trying to find the problem. I replaced one of these on my truck some time back. I had a ABS brake light on though.
