Is it a cutout or is it a regulator? Usually a cutout has two terminals. On a regulator, you would have three terminals... two which would go to/from the generator, and one that would go to the battery. If nothing is connected to the field on the generator, the generator won't put out any voltage. I've seen more than one setup where the regulator was mounted on the generator. If you have a regulator mounted on your generator, the field connection on the regulator will need to be connected to the field terminal on your generator.
