About all the IHC 263 gas and 282 diesel engines have in common the water pump and the red paint! The diesel has a heavier 5-bearing crank (vs 3 bearings in the gasser), different pistons, sleeves and rods, different camshaft and valve gear, a different timing gear train and cover, etc. - none of which interchange. If I were you I'd look for a good used head for your gas motor instead.

Also keep this in mind: In the mid 60's General Motors engineers converted a V-6 truck engine (the "Toro Flow"), and in the late 70's a V8 car engine (the Olds 350) to diesels - both with disastrous results. There's a valuable lesson there!
