Carey - If the steering is right there should be only a slight amount of backlash between the worm and sector gear - about 1" of free travel measured at the steering wheel rim is good. Before your spend $$$ to replace the gears, consider this experience I had: My Super H had sloppy steering caused by excessive backlash between the worm and sector, and by badly worn pivot shaft bushings. While installing the new bushings I discovered the bearing surface at the upper end of the pivot shaft was worn considerably - probably 0.020" undersized. So even with a new bushing shell in place, radial play from the undersized shaft left the sector gear to far away from the worm for a good mesh. It also let the sector gear move for and aft slightly which compounded the backlash problem. To correct I removed the new bushing shell, then reinstalled it with some thin brass shim stock between the OD of the bushing shell and the ID of the upper bolster casting. I positioned the shim to move the sector gear closer to the worm. Took a couple of tries to figure out the correct thickness and width for the shim, but when finished all the radial play at the top of the pivot shaft had been eliminated and the backlash observed at the steering wheel had been reduced from 6" to about 1". And it only cost me a couple bucks for a small assortment of brass shim stock.
