Hal, If I understand your problem correctly, it is similar to one I had on my H. The pin you refer to slides through the base of the shift leaver as well as a larger cylinder that the leaver rotates around. Basically the larger cylinder slides through an opening in the shifter base and the smaller pin slides into them both at a 90° angle. The whole thing is really very simple (despite my rambling attempt to describe it). The holes in the deck casting are on both sides and are plugged by small caps that are held in by friction. It's possible that one of the holes in the casting is really worn but more than likely when you clean out the other side you'll find they match pretty well. All three of these parts are available from you IH dealer and inexpensive. If you pull the shifter leaver out be careful not to let any of the parts fall into the opening or you will have to remove the deck to get them out. If you need a picture or part numbers I probably help. I'll be out till Tuesday. Good luck.
