You did post that the start feature was 6 volt- have not personally seen that feature in other than 12 volt. If perhaps 12 volts was applied, the batteries could have been damaged. But the necessity to use the start feature indicates that the batteries sat at least partially discharged for a time- that is death to a lead-acid storage battery. The battery plates will sulfate if discharged and quickly will not accept a charge at all. Keep fully charged at all times. If the tractors sit near each other, make light gage 18 or 16 gage jumper wires with alligator clips from Radio Shack. Use a 12 volt trickle charger- the only voltage in which they are available, as far as I know. Jump positive of tractor #1 to the negative of tractor #2. Attach the negative of the charger to battery #1. Attach positive of the charger to positive of battery #2. This places the batteries in series as far as the charger is concerned. No need to disconnect the batteries from the tractor. But no metal from the two tractors touching each other. The charger I have has no output unless it senses a voltage from the battery. When ready to use a tractor, just disconnect the charger and the jumper(s) and crank the tractor. I store 2 riding mowers this way each winter. Since they are 12 volt, the jumper hookup is different.

On our first cosmetic restoration, not having a manual, we carefully marked the wires, taped the magneto in the position it came off, and were careful not to turn the engine over while we had these components off. We thought we could get by with this since the engine ran perfectly and would not need any internal work. After the cleanup and painting was done, we began reassembly and finally came to t
