The cable is a thermocoupler just like on your household furnace. It senses temperature changes and if I'm not mistaken, it expands and contracts to move your needle on the guage. You will need to replace both the thermocoupler and guage assembly. They come together as one unit from your Case/IH dealer. Good luck!
