Temp Gauge on 806

The coolant temperature gauge does not work on my 806. It never moves off of "Cold". I had some time on my hands the other day and started looking into it. I located the temperature sensor (thanks to K.B.) on the cylinder head. There is a spiral steel coiled shield that goes all the way from the temp sensor to the gauge. I thought this would contain electrical wires. After examining the gauge, I found there was no other connections at the gauge other than this coiled shield. There is a nut at the point where the coil shield joins the gauge so I unthreaded the nut. I then pulled on the coil shield to see if I could remove it from the gauge but found that I could not. I discovered that if I moved the coil shield around, the needle in the gauge also moved around as if they were mechanically connected. This lead me to believe that maybe the temperature sensor is actually some kind of coiled up bi-metal spring and there is a cable inside of the coiled shield, and the other end of the cable is fixed to the needle on the gauge. Since my gauge doesn't work, maybe the cable is broken or something like that. Am I correct about my assumptions as to how the temp sensor and gauge work? If not, just what kind of mechanism is this temperature sensor and gauge?
