Inside the bulb is a liquid that builds up pressure in response to temperature.What you read as temperature is the pressure of the fluid inside the bulb/tube assembly.In instrumentation,the assembly is called a capillary tube.They are filled at the factory and if the fill leaks out,it will no longer operate and unfortunately can't be repaired.There are temperature gauges that operate on a bimetallic spiral.These have an extention that usually projects straight out of the back of the gauge and the spiral element is directly connected to the gauge pointer.There also is a themocouple gauge that has a thermocouple connected to a millivolt meter that is calibrated to read temperature.The assembly on your tractor is a capillary.Hope you folks didn't mind my rambling.I work on instrumentation and enjoy discussing it.
