Thanks, Mike. You've given me another clue as to the problem I had with my '46 H. I had to replace the fourth/fifth slider gear; it had the classic "jumps out of road gear." I thought I needed to replace the transmission driver shaft as well, the ends of the splines looked worn. When I got the new shaft and compared it to the old one I realized the old one wasn't really worn, the splines were just rounded off a little. I went ahead and replaced it anyway, after all I had the new shaft (about $180, and I hate to return stuff). It didn't work. The teeth just didn't mesh right with the old constant mesh gear. It bound up to where you couldn't turn it by hand at all. Thank goodness we hadn't put it back together before finding out. I hate to think what letting the clutch out would have done to it. Anyway, I put the old one back in, works fine. Now I've got a spare sitting on the shelf. I may never need it, but I'm too lazy to put in a classified ad.
