Filter is good possibility for dirt to enter. When you have reconnected all your air inlet fittings a quick way to make sure you have them good and tight is to spray each connection with a can of ether while the engine is running, if it speeds up then you have a connection that needs tightened or a hose that has a crack and needs replaced. Used this method on a friends tractor that we thougnt connections were tight but they weren't. Just a thought. Keep us informed.
