Thanks for the reply. I'll try better with explaining the 30-degrees. I painted the timing marks with white paint to see easily with a timing light...one on the flywheel, and the one on the clutch housing dust cover. With the engine running, the light connected to the #1 spark plug, and shining the light through the hand-hole in the clutch housing, the timing mark flashes at approximately 30-40 degrees farther counter-clockwise than dead center. In other words, if you consider the stationary mark at 6-o'clock, the one on the flywheel is flashing at around 5-o'clock. This tells me that it is firing late, or retarded, by the 30 or so degrees from dead center. The best I can get it, with the distributor rotated full away from the engine, is the 30-40 degrees. If I move the distributor toward the engine, the flashing mark on the flywheel moves even farther counter clock-wise, which I think is retarding the timing more. Thanks again for the help.
