I am just getting to this post and I've got to give you my three dollars($.02 corrected for inflation). 1. The capacitor. It's only purpose in life is contact protection. Take it out you'll run but points will burn fast. Capacitors fail three ways: short- the result is no charge in coil primary, leak- primary circuit will charge but not correctly, open- burned contacts. 2. Timing. These old engines were designed to be hand cranked. They could not safely be cranked if they fired before top-dead-center. Therefore they are static timed at TDC(open points at the timing mark). Once the engine starts and the distributor picks up speed the spark is advanced by the centrifigal device. Someone said thirty degrees was normal. You said you saw thirty degrees using using a timing light to do a dynamic test. Sounds good to go. Change the points, tie down a good capacitor and static time and you've probably done all you can. You implied the tractor was running well but short on power. Do you have a basis of comparison? An A is a pretty small unit. Do you know of a similar tractor and cutting condition to make a comparison?
