Hope someone can help a tractor idiot with an odd problem. I've got a '46 Farmall H that I use to bushhog my lot. When I run it for long (1.5 hr) periods, it will suddenly begin to chug and die, but first I'll get significant, foot high flames shooting out of the exhaust. After it dies, the flames burn out. Then it won't start again for an hour or so, till it cools off. I've got the original magneto on it. I've found a few notes in this forum to indicate that timing may be a factor. Any agreement? I'm not sure if it's overheating as the temperature gauge quit. Nothing's boiling over, though. I've had the tractor for 6 years, but usually only use it for three or four days a year, so haven't done any maintenance beyond oil and coolant. Usually I find that my equipment lasts a lot longer if I never try to work on it. I'm less dangerous without tools in my hands. I'm afraid that this situation will require me to actually assault my venerable old workhorse with tools. Any help that can be offered will be appreciated. Mostly by the tractor.

Top that off with an old set of '36 Ford headlight shells bolted to the hood. Pretty unlikely for a car... but for a tractor, this is pretty normal. It seems that more often than not they a
