No argument with what others are saying, tractor is not hot enough. Having said that however, there may be another solution. Your tractors thermostat may require changing. This may not cure your problem if tractor is large enough. I don't agree that this will not harm your engine, a cool engine wears more than one at proper temperature. Situations like this only serve to remind one it is important to match hp to job. I realize sometimes we must do those light chores as well as heavy ones. I also realize having a small engine on wood splitter is a poor solution, nothing worse than a small engine used 3 days per year. One item you might try is when you take a break from wood splitting (5-10 min.) let your tractor idle at 1000 rpm. I have a lot of hours behind me with diesel engines, and consistantly got 10,000 hours between rebuilds. I had a rule on my farm; Never let an engine idle below 1000 rpm. An engine running below 1000 rpm was an ENGINE SHUT DOWN. To me low idle was used for hitching, etc.
