On the Super M the marks are a small prick punch mark between two teeth, and double mark that looks that looks sorta a pair of parenthesis exactly 180 degrees opposite. I gotta think the marks are the same on a regular M. On the crank gear the mark can be a punch mark on a gear tooth, or a bevelled tooth. With crank to #1 TDC, the tooth with the timing mark will be in mesh with the cam gear. Punch below for a photo of a Super M cam gear. Note where the marks are in relation to the keyway. Note also marks aren't real obvious - you may have to lightly sand the machined surface to make them visible.
