Before you start tearing into the engine, I suggest that you check to make sure that the starter drive isn't jammed. They will jam against the flywheel gear and lock up the engine sometimes. Put it in 5th and rock the rear wheels back and forth, sometimes that will work it loose. Or take the bolts out of the starter, pull it back and see if the engine is free. I just found that problem on a friends A that he thought he had big problems in the engine. Turned out to be a sticky starter drive.
