John: There've been enough timing questions lately that I'm not sure which were yours, so forgive me if I hit something that's already been suggested. Also have no idea of your experience, so aplogies If I say something too basic. No insults intended. First off, if the high spot on the cam is passing under the rub block on the spring side of the points without opening them, then the points are adjusted way too tight. You set the points to the right gap while the high spot of the cam is under the block. IF it's a matter of the cam lobe never getting under the block across the span you can turn the distributor, then it's entirely possible that your cam or governor drive gear is out of time. The fully correct way to check this is to remove the front end, pull the crank pulley and timing cover and line up the marks on the cam, crank and governor gears. What you might want to try first -- *only* if you're confident that your valves are in the right position at TDC (that means the cam is properly timed to the crank)-- is pull the front off the governor, then pull the gear forward out of the bushing and re-orient it so that it puts your distributor in a position that the dist cam lobes can reach the rub block on the points (You won't be able to see the punch mark on the cam gear with the timing cover on, so, with everything else at TDC try starting with meshing the spot with two punch marks between teeth of the governor gear with the cam gear). This isn't just according to Hoyle, but it should put you in the range where you can make the adjustment if the problem is with the timing of the governor gear. Engine wear wouldn't throw it out this far, and it would have had to jump more than one tooth. If the cam gear is on tight, it sounds more like someone worked on the governor, took the gear out and didn't get it back in right. Sorry for the length. Good luck! ScottyNY
