Positive ground

Can someone tell me how to determine the proper way to ground the battery, positive or negative?
I own a B, it came with no battery, a 12 V. regulator, 6 V. generator, 6 V. starter and magneto ignition. I really need help finding reference material,diagrams or pictures for wiring back to stock or with a regulator. I have an I&T manual but has nothing on elecrical. Also can someone tell me what the rotary switch mounted on steering support does,it appears to be a light switch with a sort of voltage regulator. Thank you in advance.
