Scott, if your tractor has a 12 volt regulator it was probably rewired for 12 volts. The 6 volt generator could have been modified to generate 12 volts. Take the generator to a rebuilder and have them to test it for you and determine its output. The original 6 volt starter will work fine as is. The system will most likey be negative ground. Observe the regulator closely and if the system was positive ground there should be some marking on it. You will want to polarize the system once you reassemble everything.
