When I read your post I got the impression that when you turn the steering wheel the large shaft that runs straight down from the worm & sector gear housing to the wheels is turning as it should and the problem is in the area of the lower bolster. I'm thinking that when you say the worm disconnects from the sector it is because you have the half circle sector. If it is that the retaining plug to which the Red and jmyt_47 refer has come out you would have something that looks sort of like in the pictures I've linked here. I think. Maybe. Clear us up on this and we'll be more help.
