Just looked at a 706 today, it is in real nice shape exept for one problem- the parking brake linkage got real loose or somthing, and someone managed to get it in park and in gear at the same time, and did transmission damage. I noticed that while driving in 3rd or 4th (in both High and Low), there is a steady growling noise coming from the trans., that really seams to show itself while traveling downhill (possibly broken gear teeth?). In reverse, as you start the tractor into motion, it sometimes makes a heavy "clunk", but once you get moving, no more noise. Can anyone tell me what all is wrong here, what is involved in fixing it, and what parts will cost? I might be able to get someone to help me fix it myself, so the cost of labor might not be a problem, but it would be just great if someone could tell me what this could cost in terms of parts. Thanks!

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
