I just finished repairing a late model 706 for the same problem. We put in used parts and the total cost for the parts was around $900. I'm not sure of the cost for the gaskets and misc small items because the owner got those at the local dealer. The noise in forward gears is likely due to pieces from the broken gear falling on other gears and damaging the teeth. The reverse gear is almost the last gear to come out of the rear housing. I would recommend checking the bearings on the small countershaft in the bottom of the housing while you are there, we are starting to see problems with these as these tractors get some age.
