For the most part,they were made to run on kerosene or distallate,not gasoline.But those that were made for staright gas were intended to run on the gas that was available,being leaded gas.One benift was it lubricated the valves.If you have had the seats replaced in the head you can use regualr unleaded with no problems.But even of you havent and you are only using it occasionally I wouldnt worry about it.I have sen some use a lead substitute and be ok and some not and be ok.I have also seen it the other way as well,worn valves and guides,but that could have been from 50 someodd yrs of service too!
