you didnt tell us about oil usage if your hy oil is getting into the crankcase this would explain some of the smoking. Sounds like the journal on the hy pump is bad and the seal is leakinkg. You need a speedy sleeve on the input shaft where the seal seats. Run a compression check that will tell you engine condition quick.
