does your cub have a magnito? if it does minedid the same thing. your cub has 2 timings. the crank timing that everyone adjusts .however the points have to be timed with the snap impulse in the magnito. in my case I set the pionts to the specified gap and it did the same thing as yours. I simply narrowd th gap slightly, reset the timing on the distributer and that took care of it. Also try replaceing the condenser. Good luck.
