Engine gas sediment bowl

I don't want to sound ignorant but could someone explain to me how the fuel from the gas tank goes to the sediment bowl is then pumped upwards to a updraft carb. Is this some type of pump which is located on the lower part of the engine block and how does it work? The engine is a I.H. C-135 endine.
